Module 2 Tasks - Chat

The first time I knew about chat was in 1998. Actually the one who introduced me to use internet as a chit chat was my college friend. I didn’t feel any interest at the first time when my friend talked about chatting. But she asked me to give it a try, so I said okay. Finally I got addicted with that. I have tried ICQ, MIRC (which I met my husband :)), MSN and Yahoo Messenger as well. I did have ICQ number before but it was long time ago. So now I have to download ICQ again and get the new ICQ number. Aha....My new ICQ number is 408584114. I have tried to launch ICQ with my computer but It wouldn't work. Since my computer using Windows Vista 64 bit, there are a lot of problems came out. Most of them not compatible with 64 bit. So I asked my husband to change it to Windows Vista 32 bit. Guess what, the ICQ is work. I had a chat with Tess even only for a while, but I enjoyed it. Actually I always used MSN or Yahoo messenger. Because most of my friend used MSN or Yahoo messenger. Only for this NET11 task I downloaded ICQ. ICQ is easy to understand and easy to manage as well. For add contact I prefer MSN messenger or Yahoo messenger. Because at ICQ we still can add someone that we didn't know. But MSN messenger or Yahoo Messenger contact list are people that we are already knew such as family and friends. However ICQ still alright for instant messaging. Anyway Tess told me that we gonna have a chat this Sunday afternoon.

Module 2 Tasks Newsgroups

Whew.....Got confused for a while with this task. Before started I went to how stuff works and have read how's newsgroups work. I took a tour of usenet sites and newzbot but finally I used the link to access Usenet through Google. Honestly at the first time I didn't know what to do with this tasks. But I kept read from howstuffworks about the newsgroups and I understood what to do now.
I used Usenet through google to access and subscribe to a newsgroup. I like to collect many different cooking recipes. Cooking is one of my hobby. So I subcribes to rec.food.cooking. Here is the link http://groups.google.com/group/rec.food.cooking/topics.

Some of the posts, they're not related to the groups. Especially they had a lot of spam and also adult content. I also subcribes to alt.cooking.chefs, but most of the posts not even related to this groups. This is the link http://groups.google.com/group/alt.cooking.chefs/topics?lnk

Then I did send a post, here is my post :

I like the simple and easy cooking. I would really happy if anyone can tell me where i can find the link. I had one recipe how to cook fish fillet with microwave. 100 g butter 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon rind 3 tablespoons lemon juice 2 tablespoons finely chooped fresh herbs such as chives or parsley 4 white fish fillets ( about 200g each)
1. Put the butter in a microwave-safe jug and cook on High for 2 minutes, until melted. Add the lemon rind and juice and the herbs. 2. Put the fish in a microwave-safe dish and cook, covered, on High (100%) for about 4 minutes, or until the fish flakes easily with a fork. Leave to stand for 2 minutes. 3. Reheat the Lemon Herb Butter for 30 seconds and pour over the fish. Garnish with whole chives.
Enjoy it.....

Module 2 Lists

Before I started the next tasks which is pros and cons between emai lists versus discussion boards I went to join an email lists which I never done before. Actually at the first time, I don't even know what email lists is. So I surfed at the internet and also read all about it at discussion boards. Because I was already a part of discussion boards with the university I can make the conclusions.

Email Lists Pros:
Email lists are useful since they'll be delivering to your definite email account, they look like to be very easy to use and steer. Infact if you can send an email you can be a part of an email lists. You don't have to go out to serach for discussion board everytime you want to discuss about something the email will come to you.
They are totally for public or membership and you also can find lots of opinion and information on many issues.

Email Lists Cons:
- After a short time you received those email, you can find those email quite annoying because they get more constant and can even fill up your email account.
- You may not receive timely answers to queries or comments.

Discussion Boards Pros:
- Usually the set up and design is quite practical and simple while it's different to the email setup. You can rapidly and efficiently discover who is sending the post as well. Absolutely there are more quality and content than your email list.
- It does also make a sense of public and support people who are having similar experiences.

Discussion Boards Cons:
-Actually to logon into the discussion boards take longer time and its waste of time. Email lists are faster to access. Sometime you also can find different conversations and topics at once in the discussion boards which are also make you confuse.
-There is a risk of being absolutely plagued with the total of information enclosed on them.

  • Discussion Boards are more suitable for educational purposes and discussions such as university or school which you don't particularly want filling up your email account.

  • Email Lists are more suitable for information sharing, advertising and suited to your personal interests such as games, computer, internet or hobbies, as these stuffs not annoying you if they are really filling up your email.

Module 2 Tasks - Email Tasks

Before starting the tasks, I have read the email tutorial and answered the quiz as well at the end of each page.

1. What information about a user's email, the origin of a message, and the path it took, can you glean from an email message?
Information about the user's email, origin of a message and the path it took can be found in the header of an email. Generally the email program are set up in standard header that containing the subject title, the sender's email address, the time when the email was sent, who else the email was sent directly, if there's got any attachment, a reply to another email, the return path and authentication details.
I have had a look at my email account. I'm using yahoo mail, at yahoo mail you can select compact, standard or full message header. Here is the full message header as shown at this image.

2. In what cases would youfind it useful to use the 'cc', 'bcc' and 'reply all' functions of email?
'CC' or Carbon Copy is useful when sending an email to other recipients. Each recipient can see the other recipients email address and can reply to all recipients. It's allow people not directly concerned with the message but that you wish to keep up to date with the message contents or even the fact of having sent email to the recipients to be put on copy.

3. In what ways can you ensure that an attachment you send will be easily opened by the receiver?
To ensure that an attachment we send will be easily opened by the receiver, we have to make sure that the file can be read by the recipient. If we are not sure it is a good idea to save the attachment as plain text (ASCII) or a rich text file (RTF). The next option is to zip (compress) the files using a zip utility such as WinZip or Win Ace before sending them. These are shareware programs that you can download from the internet free.

4.What sorts of filters or rules do you have set up, and for what purpose?
I have a spam filter on my email, all incoming emails will be filtered and the spam filter will automatically put all spam emails into spam folder.

5. How have you organised the folder structure of your email and why?
I have 2 email addresses, one is from yahoo for my personal email and another from uni for my study purposes.
Both of my email addresses have default folders already set up. The folders in my yahoo account are inbox, drafts, sent, spam, trash and contacts. I always check my email daily and I'll delete all my emails that are not needed anymore. The spam folder will automatically clean all the spam emails periodically without me deleting.
As for my uni email account I use it only for my study purposes and I haven't change the default folders set up. Until now I still haven't deleted any email from this account because I'm afraid that the email might be needed in the future relating to my study. Actually I'm not really familiar with the folders in this email account. All I use just the inbox folder.

Module 1 Further exploration

Arghhhh...I left behind, with this unit :( Now I'll try to catch up. After finished traced the route from centralops.net to curtin.edu.au, I decided to download A-ToolBar. First time got trouble after downloaded A-ToolBar, finally I realized that because I used Windows Vista 64 bit. A-ToolBar couldn't run with it. It always said error. So I tried to download againfrom my husband computer. Coz his computer used Vista 32 bit. It worked...I just feel so happy. Here is the result to ping curtin.edu.au:

The average time over 5 pings: 92.4

My opinion is it would take less time to ping from my computer than from centralops.net to curtin. This is because my computer server and the curtin server are both located in Australia and centralops server is located in America. Then I tried to ping from my computer using cmd and the result is similar as using A-ToolBar. The average time time was 95ms. After that I did traceroute with cmd to curtin.edu.au the result got 14 hops with three
request time out.
